A Focus on Teaching and Learning for
Graduate Teacher
Education Programs
The curriculum is designed to prepare well-qualified and committed teaching
professionals. Every child in Mississippi needs and deserves a quality teacher. Both the
M.Ed. and the M.A.T. focus on the core technology of the educational
professionteaching and learning.
Academic excellence. Each program seeks to assist
teachers in developing a strong knowledge base relative to curriculum development,
instructional strategies, school improvement and leadership. Graduate students are
encouraged to apply educational technology in their own learning and in the school
setting. Faculty members encourage inquiry into the nature of learning and the effects of
teaching.
Professional knowledge.The curriculum seeks to
continually expand the students professional knowledge. Teachers are encouraged to
access current research to become more knowledgeable about innovations and to evaluate the
effectiveness of instructional programs and practices. Teachers are trained to use
a
variety of instructional strategies that promote students development of critical
thinking, problem solving and performance skills.
Leadership opportunities. The curriculum focuses on the
application of leadership skills in enhancing instruction in the classroom. Teachers are
provided opportunities to utilize leadership skills within the classroom, among fellow
faculty members and the administration, and with parents and the community to facilitate
school improvement.
Character development. The curriculum requires teachers
to demonstrate integrity in their own learning and helps teachers integrate
Christian principles into the classroom, the school and the community. Teachers are also encouraged
to develop and implement models of service to both schools and communities.
A college committed to excellence, a nontraditional program design and a
curriculum focused on teaching and learningthree components that will facilitate the
preparation of teacher leaders. Belhaven has given a new look to an old idea. Come join us
