A College Committed to Excellence:
Graduate Teacher Education Programs
Why should you consider Belhaven College?
Hear what Graduate Teacher Education student Matt Schane has to say . . .

I feel that being in the MAT program here at Belhaven gives me a step up on others because of the instruction and guidance we get not only from our teachers, but our peers as well.
Belhaven has a proven track record of graduating students of high academic quality and strong ethical character. The College has established a solid academic reputation for serving adult students pursuing Graduate Teacher Education degrees. The faculty and staff have demonstrated the ability to design and deliver quality academic programs for working adults.
Educating quality teachers. Belhaven College has a long tradition of academic excellence in preparing teachers. Originally founded as a women’s college, Belhaven’s first "professional degree" was in teacher education. Since that time, the college has produced thousands of teachers who have filled classrooms in Mississippi and many other states. The National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification accredits Belhaven’s undergraduate degree in teacher education. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has approved the addition of programs for the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) and the Master of Education (M.Ed.).
Meeting the needs of adult learners. Belhaven has been providing adult education to Central Mississippi for years and has established a solid academic reputation for serving the adult learner. Belhaven currently offers bachelor’s and master’s level courses for over 500 students via evening and weekend classes. The M.A.T. and the M.Ed. programs use the same format that has worked successfully for the Master of Business Administration degree—intense classroom study followed by study group projects and collaboration with fellow professionals.
Imparting a Christian world and life view. Students in today’s classrooms need teachers of high academic quality and strong Christian character. All courses taught at Belhaven are purposefully designed to enable students to develop a Biblical worldview in order to grapple with the major moral and philosophical issues of life.
Creating teacher leaders. At Belhaven, the faculty and staff believe that teachers should provide leadership in our classrooms, schools and communities. The curricula for both the M.A.T. and the M.Ed. incorporate the knowledge base on effective leadership and offer multiple opportunities for students to practice leadership skills throughout the programs. We believe success in today’s schools requires leadership at all levels.
